The United Soccer Coaches 7v7/9v9 female only coaching course went off without a hitch on Sunday, March 1 at Boston University. Nancy Feldman, head women’s soccer coach at Boston University, and I were the course instructors for the six-hour course that focused on coaching 9-12 year olds. Out of the 37 women in attendance, 15 were current college players!
The goal of this course was to encourage young college players and coaches to start their coaching education journey. As part of the Steel Sports Women’s Initiative, I felt it was important to use my platform as a United Soccer Coaches National Staff coach to organize a course in which female coaches would feel welcome in a supportive environment.
With the help of Nancy Feldman, we marketed the course to current college coaches and players as well as local town coaches. By donating our time as instructors, we were able to secure a discounted fee of only $25 for college players. This was very important to us as the reduced cost made the course possible for those whom may not have been able to pay the full amount.
To top off the event, U.S. Women’s National Team legend and two-time World Cup and Olympic champion Kristine Lilly joined the course to show her support for getting more women in the coaching ranks.
